Our Learning Approach

Rooted In Curiosity
The Curiosity ApproachⓇ in early years learning is all about one big idea: children learn best when their natural curiosity is respected, protected, and fuelled. It’s a philosophy (not a strict curriculum) inspired by Reggio Emilia, Montessori, and Steiner, and it pushes back against loud, plastic-heavy, adult-led classrooms.
The Core Belief
Children are born curious. If we create the right environment and give them time, space, and trust, they will: explore deeply, problem-solve naturally, build independence and develop intrinsic motivation.

Our Environment
At Adventurers Nursery in Exeter, the environment plays an important role in how children learn. Our rooms are calm, welcoming and thoughtfully arranged to feel more like a home than a classroom. We use soft, natural colours and real materials such as wood, fabric and baskets, with carefully chosen resources that encourage children to explore without feeling overwhelmed. Everything is set out at child height so children can make their own choices and feel confident in their space.
We use real, everyday objects rather than plastic toys wherever possible. Children may explore items such as teapots, cutlery, shells, keys, pinecones, old phones or handbags as part of their play. Using real objects shows children that they are trusted, which helps them develop responsibility, confidence and respect for their surroundings.
Our Approach to Learning
Learning is led by each child's interests. Our practitioners spend time observing and listening, allowing children to explore ideas in their own way. Instead of rushing children or expecting one "right" answer, we ask open-ended questions and give children time to repeat activities, practise skills and build understanding through play.
We believe children learn best when they are not rushed. Our day is planned to allow long periods of uninterrupted play, with fewer transitions and less interruption. This slower pace helps children become deeply involved in what they are doing and supports concentration, creativity and enjoyment in learning.
Our practitioners build warm, respectful relationships with every child. They act as gentle guides and learning partners, supporting children with care and encouragement while modelling curiosity and a love of learning. This approach helps children feel safe, valued and confident as they grow and develop.
